Bluefield State Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Make Historic Debut in CIAA Tournament
Bluefield State University's Men's and Women's basketball teams are set to participate in their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament since rejoining the conference. The 2024 Food Lion CIAA Men's and Women's basketball tournament will take place from February 26 to March 3 at the CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.

B-State Commemorates First Cohort of Accelerated Nursing Graduates
On November 30, 2023, the first group of students in West Virginia to complete their nursing education in an accelerated program was honored in a pinning ceremony at Bluefield State University. This pioneering group includes Christen Blackburn, Zachary Cline, Hannah Goode, Julie Murphy, and Angela Trussell. The pinning ceremony is a long-standing student tradition in nursing education and marks the completion of all educational requirements to be a nurse. Accelerated nursing programs allow students to earn their Associate of Science in Nursing (A.S.N.) degree in about 18 months.
Alumnus Returns to Lead Bluefield State University
The Board of Governors of Bluefield State University is pleased to announce the appointment of alumnus Dr. Darrin Martin as its Interim President, following the resignation of Dr. Robin Capehart. Dr. Martin will serve as Interim President while a search is undertaken for the next President of the University. The announcement was made at a November 20, 2023, special meeting of the Board.
Dr. Martin’s appointment is especially meaningful, because he, his mother, and his grandmother are also Bluefield State graduates. “I am passionate about Bluefield State and am committed to the next chapters of the University,” said Martin.
Robin Capehart Announces Retirement as B-State President
Bluefield State University President Robin Capehart announced that he will be retiring as president of the Institution. At this afternoon’s Board of Governors’ meeting, the Board accepted Capehart’s resignation, effective December 31, 2023. Until then, he will assist in the transition of responsibilities to an acting President, to be selected by the Board in the near future.

Bluefield State University Named 2023 Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader
Bluefield State has been designated as a 2023 Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader. On September 18, the U.S. Department of State announced that BSU was included as one of 19 HBCUs as “Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders” in recognition of their noteworthy engagement with the Fulbright Program during the 2022-23 academic year.

Dr. Joseph Beckett has joined the Bluefield State University administrative team as the Institution’s Chief of Staff. With 40 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Beckett brings a wealth of academic administrative knowledge to the position.
BSU Receives $444K grant from National Institute of Health
Bluefield State University has received a $444,000 Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) from the National Institute of Health. Dr. Tesfaye Belay, a BSU Professor of Biology, authored the grant, which provides funding over three years for supporting research, creating research opportunities for students, and strengthening the research environment at the University.

Today’s ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Bluefield State University Medical Education Center (MEC) celebrated a recently completed renovation of the MEC student lounge. A gift from the Paul & Carol Cole Foundation provided funding for the renovations.

Bluefield State University student Michael Acheampong has enjoyed a productive summer. The BSU computer science major has received a prestigious Phi Eta Sigma Founder’s Fund Scholarship. Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest freshman honor society.
Dr. Ted Lewis Named BSU Beckley President, Dr. Sarita Rhonemus Named BSU Interim Provost
Bluefield State University President Robin Capehart has appointed Dr. Ted Lewis as BSU—Beckley’s President and Dr. Sarita A. Rhonemus as Bluefield State University Interim Provost. Dr. Lewis previously served as Bluefield State Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. Dr. Rhonemus was the BSU Associate Provost of Academic Affairs at the time of her appointment as Acting Provost.
